gematsu Rumor: Final Fantasy Type-0 localization nearly completed in 2011
Square Enix shelved the project, looking for resolution, says source.
Final Fantasy Type-0‘s English localization was “at least 90 percent†complete during the last quarter of 2011, according to an Operation Suzaku source.
The informer, who chose to remain anonymous, reportedly recorded voice-overs for the PSP role-playing game. But in early 2012, Square Enix “essentially†shelved the project as PSP software and hardware sales declined in western territories, he said.
Currently, the publisher is awaiting strong interest from fans, as it’s having hard time coming to a resolution regarding a western release, according to a second source. And Sony has apparently not been of any help to the matter.
Operation Suzaku, for those who haven’t heard, is a fan movement driving towards the localization of Final Fantasy Type-0. If you’d like to help their cause, sign this petition.
Square Enix of Japan has trademarked “Final Fantasy Type-0-2†in Japan.
Back in January 2011, before Final Fantasy Type-0 was revealed as Final Fantasy Agito XIII reborn, the company trademarked the names “Type-1,†“Type-2,†and “Type-3†alongside the full title “Final Fantasy Type-0.†At the time, they were considered protective trademarks, in case Final Fantasy Type-0 ever became a series. Today’s trademark, however, could signify an incoming sequel.
Other trademarks, like “Valkyrie Profile†and “Saga Frontier,†were also trademarked. There’s a handful of trademarks from Nintendo, Namco Bandai, Sega, Konami, and Level-5, as well, but none appear to be too notable.
Speaking with US Gamer, Final Fantasy Agito producer Hajime Tabata said that the iPhone and Android game “will definitely be localizedâ€. As previously reported, Square Enix recently filed a trademark for the game in Europe.
Additionally, Tabata also indicated that Square Enix are still considering bringing Final Fantasy Type-0, the PSP game which Agito is a spin-off of, to the west in some form. While he wouldn’t offer any guarantees, Tabata said that fan enthusiasm for the game has renewed Square Enix’s interest in bringing the game overseas.
Final Fantasy Agito is slated for release on iOS and Android platforms this winter in Japan. Further details regarding the game can be found here.
