Sony’s Yoshida says Nintendo brings balance to the industry

Do you also play with non-PlayStation devices? Do you enjoy playing as a plumber saving a princess? Or some bald marines? Or maybe you want to play using the touchscreen?

In a recent interview with Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida, the Sony executive discussed the direction the industry is headed and how consumers seem to be obsessed with first person modern military shooters. Yoshida admitted that he doesn’t understand why anyone would want to play only triple AAA games and that when Sony works on a title that explores creativity, like LittleBigPlanet 3 he is concerned about how people will react. He also said that Nintendo provides a good balance for those who don’t follow gaming trends.

I was very happy to get a very positive reaction when we announced LittleBigPlanet 3. We are concerned a little bit when we work on a game like LittleBigPlanet 3, about how people will react, because people want those big-budget, realistic, military shooters. But there were lots of cheers, a lot of affection.

And the reaction to Nintendo’s games in general, or a game like Splatoon. If you look at the whole industry, and you consider Nintendo, I think the balance is actually better than past years.

Splatoon is Nintendo’s own take on a multiplayer shooter, with cartoonish characters that can transform into squids who travel in the ink laid down when the character is human. The game was revealed at E3 and is Nintendo’s first foray into a first person team shooter.

There's the stereotype until now that kiddie games should be on Nintendo platforms. Sony is trying to capitalize on that kiddie games to attract parents to buy PlayStations for their kids as well. Nintendo on the other hand is trying to win the core gamers, the non-Mario fans. No More Heroes, Bayonetta 2 and Devil's Third?

Personally, I don't want to see Nintendo go. It's a wierd gaming world without Mario and Pokemon. No more "other side". There will only be shooters or there will be more.

Same here....Watching Nintendo go out of the gaming scene is like watching Michael Jordan retire...
Everybody wants Happiness, Nobody wants Pain...
But you can't have a Rainbow, without a little Rain....
