Do you also play with non-PlayStation devices? Do you enjoy playing as a plumber saving a princess? Or some bald marines? Or maybe you want to play using the touchscreen?

Fan-Made Mother 4 Is The Earthbound Continuation You Always Wanted
Image

Fans do the craziest things. Earthbound was recently released on Nintendo’s eShop 19 years after its original release on the SNES, much to the rejoice of long-time and new fans, I’m sure. The game has had a huge influence on a lot of developers, and a lot of people note the bizarre RPG among their favorite games, or at least one of the memorable games they’ve played. You’d expect a sequel of such a successful title, right?

There was, but Earthbound 2 (which was technically the third in the Mother series) was only released in Japan, much to the upset of the rest of the world. There’s a fan translation, as you’d expect, but nothing else has since arrived to satiate die-hard fans. Until now, as they say.

A bunch of fans have got together and have been developing Mother 4 (which would technically be Earthbound 3). As you’d expect, it’s a traditional RPG set in “idealized vintage America” and follows a young boy called Travis and the leader of a motorcycle gang called Leo as they get wrapped up in events surrounding a group calling themselves the Modern

Mother 4 has been in development for a few years now, and people have been speaking about it that entire time, so Nintendo have had plenty of time to send in the lawyers. They haven’t yet, but with their recent crackdown on YouTube, during which they forced everyone using footage of Nintendo games to remove it, it’s a worry that they may suddenly swoop in and close Mother 4 down.

Of course, to hopefully avoid that, this fan-made Mother 4 will be released for free, and none of the assets used in the game are stolen from anywhere else. It’s a very impressive recreation of the Mother style, actually. Still, it’s carrying the Mother name, but if Nintendo have an issue with that, then surely the name can just be changed. It depends if there are any other characters in there that belong to the Mother franchise as well. So far, the development team of Mother 4 have shown nothing but original characters, but in the FAQ, it says:

“Will character X be returning? Is character Y related to character Z?” to which they answer: “Spoilers! We’ll release that information when it’s time.”

That suggests that they will have characters in there from the rest of the series; otherwise, they’d just say no, wouldn’t they? Still, I don’t think that’s enough for Nintendo to swoop in on the project, but if they wanted to, I’m sure they’d find a way. Even then, the characters can be altered enough so Nintendo have no way of stopping the game coming out.

Hopefully, we’ll see Mother 4 released in the Winter of 2014 for Windows, Mac and Linux.
