The Avengers Still Champ, Nears $1 Billion
Dark Shadows can't suck the life out of Marvel's blockbuster epic.

As expected, Marvel's The Avengers remained the No. 1 movie in North America this weekend and is expected to cross the $1 billion mark globally Sunday after 19 days in international release. The Avengers is the only movie in history to stay No. 1 for a second weekend with a tally of $100+ million; the previous record holder was Avatar with $75.6 million. The Avengers also moved past The Dark Knight on the all-time worldwide box office chart (not adjusted for inflation, etc.).

Meanwhile, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp's adaptation of Dark Shadows underperformed for a second place debut. Here are the weekend estimates via Rentrak:

1. Marvel's The Avengers $103,163,000

2. Dark Shadows $28,805,000

3. Think Like a Man $6,300,000

4. The Hunger Games $4,400,000

5. The Lucky One $4,055,000

6. The Pirates! Band of Misfits $3,200,000

7. The Five-Year Engagement $3,095,645

8. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel $2,650,000

9. Chimpanzee $1,624,000

10. Girl in Progress $1,350,00

...last week lang pala pinalabas sa states ang battleship?
Marvel's The Avengers remained the No. 1 movie at the North American box office for the third weekend in a row, soundly defeating new releases Battleship, The Dictator and What to Expect When You're Expecting. The Avengers is now Disney's highest-grossing domestic film ever, and is currently No. 7 on the list of all-time worldwide releases (not adjusted for inflation).

Battleship, starring Taylor Kitsch, opened lower than Kitsch's earlier box office disappointment John Carter. (It's not all bad news for Battleship as it's already made over $215 million overseas since opening in many international markets April 11.) Sacha Baron Cohen's new comedy The Dictator also underperformed.

Here are the weekend estimates via Rentrak:

1. Marvel's The Avengers $55,057,000
2. Battleship $25,350,300
3. The Dictator $17,415,000
4. Dark Shadows $12,770,000
5. What to Expect When You're Expecting $10,500,000
6. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel $3,250,000
7. The Hunger Games $3,000,000
8. Think Like a Man $2,700,000
9. The Lucky One $1,765,000
10. The Pirates! Band of Misfits $1,450,000
