Portal 2 pits PC and PS3 owners against each other online

Though Steamworks isn't being allowed anywhere near the 360, for the time being, PC and PS3 owners will at least get to play together - or fight with each other in Portal 2.

Valve have been beavering away trying to finalise netcode to enable steamworks to effectively cross pollinate online game play between console and PC. It's not a new idea, but it's never quite worked as smoothly as it could in past endeavours.

Exciting stuff. Wonder if the PS3 version will have mouse and keyboard support though...

Marking the debut of Steam functioning on any next generation console, the features shipping in the PS3 version of Portal 2 include cross platform play (PC/Mac vs. PS3) for multiplayer games, persistent cloud-based storage of PS3 saved games, and cross platform chat (PC/Mac and PS3).

In addition, those who purchase Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 may unlock a Steam Play (PC & Mac) copy of Portal 2 at no additional cost by linking their PSN and Steam accounts.

"We made a promise to gamers at E3 that Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 would be the best console version of the product," said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. "Working together with Sony we have identified a set of features we believe are very compelling to gamers. We hope to expand upon the foundation being laid in Portal 2 with more Steam features and functionality in DLC and future content releases."

"We designed the Portal 2 PS3 experience to be very straightforward for gamers," said Josh Weier, project lead on Portal 2 at Valve. "PS3 gamers will be able to simply drop the Blu-Ray disc in the PS3, link to their Steam account from inside the game, and all their Steam friends (on PC and Mac) will be visible and accessible for chat and game invites."

It’s fairly clear that from the first three chambers alone, Portal 2’s co-op not only seems to be shaping up to be a classic Portal experience, but that it’s also going to cause some genuine head scratching moments along the way too. Unfortunately we weren’t able to check out any of the new gameplay gadgets, but after only about 30 minutes of gameplay, I guess that’s asking for a little too much. The humour is all present and correct too, and GLaDOS was on form throughout as she tried to drive a wedge between our partnership and the friendship of the duo. Portal 2’s co-op on this showing is shaping up to offer fans a fresh Portal experience, some mind-bending puzzles – even early on – and some of that trademark humour... and that’s just the co-op! It’s fun, it works and this is only half the game. Things seem to be shaping up rather well then for Valve’s latest title.

Portal 2 is scheduled for an April 19th and April 22nd release in North America and Europe respectively.

Valve has announced its pre-order incentives for Portal 2 today, with special offers available from participating retailers worldwide, including money off or exclusive in-game items such as bonus skins for co-op droid buddies Atlas and P-body.

"Portal 2 is shaping up to be the most innovative title in Valve's history, and to be a much larger experience than we originally planned," said Doug Lombardi, vice president of marketing at Valve. "As such, we are aggressively promoting the title with more retail promotions than we have put behind any prior release."

Facing off against GLaDOS once again, you'll bend the laws of physics and solve all manner of brain-melting portal-based puzzles with repulsion and propulsion gel, faith plates and other complex gadgets to further convolute things.

if you get the PS3 version, you get the PC version too, not vice versa, its like you get a PC download code from your PS3 game

Steam makes its appearance on the PS3 as an overlay within Portal 2. Here, the Steam overlay provides access to Steam Friends, displaying their in-game or online status and providing a quick pathway to text chats, player profiles, friend requests, and game invites. Steam Achievements are earned in lockstep with PSN Trophies and are also accessible within the Steam overlay.
Steam on the PS3 provides access to all of these features once the player has linked their PlayStation Network account with a Steam account, which is done right within the game. A Steam user can login to an existing account, and anyone new to Steam can create an account with the click of a button.
