UnMetal is a top-down free parody game of Metal Gear Solid, demo available for download
Metal Gear Solid fans, here is something for you today. Indie developer ‘franfistro’ is currently working on a top-down parody game for the first Metal Gear Solid, called UnMetal. UnMetal is a 2D stealth/action game where the goal is to escape from an enemy military base, and you can download a free demo.

Now while franfistro does not use the same names or materials with MGS, you will immediately notice the similarities. And, to be honest, this looks absolutely retro-amazing.

franfistro also plans to release the full game for free on Steam on October 2nd. Also, and while there won’t be a native Linux or Mac version, the game will be compatible with WINE.

Now while this free fan Metal Gear Solid game is not as impressive – visually – as the MGS Fan Remake in Unreal Engine 4, it has all the elements of Kojima’s classic game. So yeah, make sure to not sleep on it.

3D action-adventure platformer, Tamarin, is now available on the PC
Chameleon Games has announced that primate action-adventure Tamarin is out today on the PC. In order to celebrate this announcement, the team has also released a new trailer that you can find below.

Tamarin channels the energy of 3D platformer classics and explorative Metroidvania shooters with an environmental message for the ages. Players will explore an irresistible interconnected 3D world, brimming with primate platforming and bug-splattering shooter action.

“Leap with the agility of a tamarin as you journey through the Northern wilderness on scenic routes through forests, fjords and mountains, striving to curb the insect invasion dancing to their own destructive beat. Along the way you will collect mysterious electrical fireflies, rescue innocent birds and discover the underground base of the dancing ants while battling to restore the tamarins’ once idyllic natural habitat.”

Director Omar Sawi has brought Tamarin to life together with an all-star cast from Rare’s golden era. To mention a few, Banjo-Kazooie character designer Steve Mayles helped craft the iconic new tamarins. Diddy Kong and Battletoads designer Kev Bayliss provided character concept art. Donkey Kong 64 artist Richard Vaucher leads the art production. And Donkey Kong Country and Starfox Adventures composer David Wise tunes in with a melodic and atmospheric soundtrack.

Omar Sawi, Founder of Chameleon Games, said:

Intel and UCSC showcase DLSS-like AI upscaling technique
Intel and UCSC have showcased a DLSS-like AI upscaling technique that will be further detailed at SIGGRAPH ASIA in December 20th. Intel and UCSC have used the Unreal Engine 4 Infiltrator Tech Demo in order to showcase this new AI upscaling image reconstruction tech.

This new AI upscaling technique is called QW-Net. According to the teams, QW-Net is a neural network for image reconstruction, where close to 95% of the computations can be implemented with 4-bit integers.

“This is achieved using a combination of two U-shaped networks that are specialized for different tasks, a feature extraction network based on the U-Net architecture, coupled to a filtering network that reconstructs the output image. The feature extraction network has more computational complexity but is more resilient to quantization errors. The filtering network, on the other hand, has significantly fewer computations but requires higher precision. Our network uses renderer-generated motion vectors to recurrently warp and accumulate previous frames. This produces temporally stable results with significantly better quality than TAA; a widely used technique in current games.”

Unfortunately, though, this image reconstruction technique is for offline usage (at least for now). UCSC claims that an optimized implementation for real-time inference remains future
work. In other words, we may never see this technique in games. Still, it’s fascinating witnessing alternatives to DLSS. It also shows how ahead of its time NVIDIA was with its image reconstruction technique.

For comparison purposes:

“Concurrent to our work, Xiao introduced a reconstruction technique based on U-Net. Using an optimized inference implementation they reconstruct a 1080p image in 18 to 20 ms on a high-end GPU. In comparison, DLSS reconstructs a 4K image in under 2 ms. Both these approaches can reconstruct images at a higher resolution than the input render.”

Super Mario 64 PC with Ray Tracing is now available for download
In May 2020, we informed you about an unofficial native DX12 version of Super Mario 64 for the PC. And today, DarioSamo released a public technical version of Super Mario 64 Ray Tracing. As the name implies, this version adds full path tracing support to the open-source Super Mario 64 port for PC.

According to DarioSamo, all GPUs that support Ray Tracing can run this special version of Super Mario 64 PC. Do note, though, that this mod is in a very early state. Thus, you’ll likely encounter plenty of visual and performance problems.

Going into more technical details, this mod packs a fully path-traced renderer. It also brings custom level lighting for all stages, as well as dynamic sphere lights for objects and particles. Moreover, it features Classic Phong shading and support for Normal Maps. Furthermore, it introduces real-time raytraced shadows, reflections, refractions and global illumination.

In order to showcase the game’s Ray/Path tracing effects, DarioSamo also released the following trailer. Additionally, Digital Foundry shared a video showing 34 minutes of gameplay footage from it.


You can download the Super Mario 64 PC Ray Tracing mod from here.

Lastly, and speaking of Super Mario 64, we also suggest trying some other mods. There is a mod that allows you to play as Luigi and another that allows you to play as Wario. There is also an impressive Doom mod for it. These mods should, theoretically, be compatible with this Ray Tracing mod.
