Silence himself = commit suicide or his family will suffer. Honestly i find that hard to believe. Atleast not to the point of actually killing himself. I get your idea though that his family might be implicated/ persecuted with all the bad rep that he has gotten, but he can always choose to go to jail and not implicate anyone while waiting for a more "favourable" administration.

Anyway purely speculation.
