Pads and tablets

Do you also play with non-PlayStation devices? Do you enjoy playing as a plumber saving a princess? Or some bald marines? Or maybe you want to play using the touchscreen?

on paper, it looks like the iPad has no chance, but in the user experience department it can't be surpassed, check out the sales of the iPad 2, its selling like hotcakes

Xoom : Ipad performace test

Early, detailed benchmarks of the iPad 2's performance have provided a surprise win by Apple over the Motorola Xoom. Despite NVIDIA's reputation for fast graphics, AnandTech found the PowerVR SGX543MP2 in the iPad 2 was in some cases several times faster in Imagination Technologies' GLBenchmark 2.0 than the Xoom's Tegra 2 chip. While the Xoom has to drive a higher 1280x800 resolution, the difference wouldn't have been enough to claim the edge.
Web tests, which leaned more heavily on the processor, also favored Apple. Both Apple's A5 and NVIDIA's Tegra 2 are ARM Cortex-A9 processors, but the iPad 2 loaded pages significantly faster. The benchmark was both a demonstration of whatever optimizations were made to the A5 as well as to the Nitro JavaScript engine. For Google, the loss might be felt deeper as it has built the reputation of its Chrome desktop browser, which Android 3.0 shares, on speed.

The performance increase may have been more impressive given Apple's hardware performance. Its A5 is clocked at about 900MHz, lower than the 1GHz on the Tegra 2 in the Xoom. Mobile Geekbench 2 tests comparing the iPad 2 to the original supported Apple's claims that the new model's A5 was about twice as quick in raw math.

The tests don't necessarily reflect performance in every condition and could see Motorola's tablet run faster if an app were properly optimized. However, at least in raw performance, the benchmarking would give Apple a performance lead not just over the Xoom but over every Android 3.0 tablet using the same 1GHz Tegra 2, such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Earlier this morning we published our first impressions on Apple's iPad 2, including analysis on camera quality and a dive into the architecture behind Apple's A5 SoC. Our SoC investigation mostly focused on CPU performance, which we found to be a healthy 50% faster than the A4 in the original iPad - at least in web browsing. We were able to exceed Apple's claim of up to 2x performance increase in some synthetic tests, but even a 50% increase in javascript and web page loading performance isn't anything to be upset about. We briefly touched on the GPU: Imagination Technologies' PowerVR SGX 543MP2. Here Apple is promising up to a 9x increase in performance, but it's something we wanted to investigate.

Architecturally the 543MP2 has more than twice the compute horsepower of the SGX 535 used in Apple's A4. Each shader pipeline can execute twice the number of instructions per clock as the SGX 535, and then there are four times as many pipes in an SGX 543MP2 as there are in a 535. There are also efficiency improvements as well. Hidden surface removal works at twice the rate in the 543MP2 as it did in the 535. There's also a big boost in texture filtering performance as you'll see below.

As always we turn to GLBenchmark 2.0, a benchmark crafted by a bunch of developers who either have or had experience doing development work for some of the big dev houses in the industry. We'll start with some of the synthetics.

Over the course of PC gaming evolution we noticed a significant increase in geometry complexity. We'll likely see a similar evolution with games in the ultra mobile space, and as a result this next round of ultra mobile GPUs will seriously ramp up geometry performance.

Here we look at two different geometry tests amounting to the (almost) best and worst case triangle throughput measured by GLBenchmark 2.0. First we have the best case scenario - a textured triangle:

The original iPad could manage 8.7 million triangles per second in this test. The iPad 2? 29 million. An increase of over 3x. Developers with existing titles on the iPad could conceivably triple geometry complexity with no impact on performance on the iPad 2.

Now for the more complex case - a fragment lit triangle test:

The performance gap widens. While the PowerVR SGX 535 in the A4 could barely break 4 million triangles per second in this test, the PowerVR SGX 543MP2 in the A5 manages just under 20 million. There's just no competition here.

I mentioned an improvement in texturing performance earlier. The GLBenchmark texture fetch test puts numbers to that statement:

We're talking about nearly a 5x increase in texture fetch performance. This has to be due to more than an increase in the amount of texturing hardware. An improvement in throughput? Increase in memory bandwidth? It's tough to say without knowing more at this point.

Medyo malaki din namam pala difference ng A4 sa A5 processor between the 2 pads. :ashamed:

Anyway, di ko pa nakikita yung Samsung Galaxy tab 10.1....meron na ba balita kung ano mga bagong features?

Yung binili ko kasi yung 64gb wifi white na ipad 2 na may kasamang smart case. Yung total ko was $780 something eh. Pero mas popular ata yung 32 gb lang on all models, nag upgrade lang ako to 64gb kasi nilalagyan ko ng mga buong anime series... :ashamed:

:ashamed:

Di ako sure about sa shipping ha, pero based sa experience ko sa ebay, yung size at weight ng ipad2 baka abutin ka mga $30 pataas sa shipping depende na din kung papaexpress mo or papainsure mo.

Hmm...di ako masyado sure about sa JRS bro. Tawagan mo muna siguro sila para sigurado...mahirap kasi dahil baka patungan ng malaki sa customs dahil papasok ata siya as valuables/electronics.

yup, lahat ng ipad 1 prices dropped by $100. galing nga ng apple eh, yung ipad2 same price nung pumabas yung ipad1 model...so instead of jacking up the prices of ipad2, binaba na lang nila yung price ng ipad1. :agree:

alam ko mukhang malabo pang dumating yung xoom dito sa pinas kasi alam ko Verizon ang unang naglabas nito, and Verizon doesn't use GSM meaning hindi sila gumagamit ng sim cards for phone/3G use. gagana naman ata kung wifi mode lang pero mas ok kung maghintay na lang for the wifi only version. almost $200 kasi difference ng 3G version sa wifi only.

Yup, other than the camera and faster processor, tingin ko naman sulit pa din bumili ng ipad 1st gen lalo na at mas mura na ng at least $100. :agree:

mukhang ok ngang kagatin yung 1st gen na ipad dahil mura na pero in the future, baka magaya sya sa mga other 1st gen products na nawalan na ng update like the 1st gen ipod touch and iphone since the new ipad has some improved specs. the 1st gen ipad could miss out on innovative updates in the future. pero matagal pa naman siguro yun..mga 3-4 years pa siguro bago hindi na makaka-receive ng update ang 1st gen ipad.

Hanngang ngayon nagkaka ubusan ng stocks ng ipad 2 sa apple stores with the online store reaching a few weeks for orders to be shipped... :ashamed:

Tapos may balita na pati ipad 1st gen nag start na maubos yung ibang models, namely the 16gb since the price drop!
