Hitman PS4 details IO details an “open, non-linear”

Hitman developer IO Interactive released a letter to fans on its site detailing its PS4 Hitman project. It’ll be a triple-A title featuring Agent 47 (but of course), which “adopts an open, non-linear level design approach”. Also: Contracts Mode is back. Well, these are all positive noises.

Hitman PS4 details
Via the official Hitman site, here’s the full letter:
Dear Hitman fans,

We wanted to share this open letter with all of you out there eagerly awaiting more news about what’s happening next in the franchise.

At Io-Interactive right now, we are building the next AAA Hitman game for PC and next-gen consoles. It has our total focus and we wanted to take a moment to tell you a few things about it.

In the next game you will experience a globetrotting Agent 47 at the prime of his career – the apex predator stalking his prey across the world, with the support of his long-term handler Diana Burnwood and the whole of the ICA.

The game concentrates on the core Hitman fantasy of using a wide range of tools to take out a diverse group of targets across expansive, exotic locations around the world. We are building this game on the backbone of the Glacier 2 engine, using the best parts and what we have learnt through Hitman: Absolution and drawing inspiration from past titles like Contracts and Blood Money to fulfil the core Hitman fantasy. That means we’re packing in an extreme level of detail on the largest levels we have ever built for a Hitman game. We’ve adopted an open, non-linear level design approach to the game, ensuring the game will play out across huge, checkpoint-free, sandbox levels. Our aim is to create living, breathing and believable levels which will allow gamers to play around with the AI to create those unique moments every fan of the Hitman franchise loves.

Contracts Mode is back – you will be able to create and build challenges by experimenting with the large levels and possibilities within them. And of course, you can share them with the world and challenge your friends or foes to complete your hits. Your rules, your Contracts.

You will also be glad to hear that we have removed 47’s magic pockets. We believe that’s all we need to say about that subject.

As we get further into 2014, we will reveal more and get into much closer contact with all of you. There are so many things we have planned and we are extremely excited for the future of Hitman.

Thank you all for your dedication. We will share much, much more in the coming months.

The Io-Interactive Team

Hitman Absolution’s reveal caused series-long fan Leon to proclaim “Old Hitman is dead” back in 2011. He eventually discovered it to be pretty excellent in the long run – this is a more encouraging, fan-pleasing tone from IO that suggests and intention to return to Contracts and Blood Money’s vast puzzles and endless replayability.

Square Enix announced the latest entry in its Hitman series during the Sony E3 2015 press conference this evening. It’s titled Hitman and will launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on December 8 as a digital-first title. The story will evolve and deepen over time, with the initial storyline concluding in 2016.
Hitman will see players perform contract hits on powerful, high-profile targets in exotic locations around the world, from the highly fashionable Paris and sunny coast of Italy to the dust and hustle of the markets in Marrakesh in this creative stealth action game.

Gameplay focuses on taking out targets in huge and intricate sandbox levels with complete freedom of approach. Where to go, when to strike and who to kill – it is all up to you. And for the first time Hitman will lead with a digital release inviting players into a world of assassination.

Square Enix and Io Interactive have delayed Hitman from its planned December 8 release to March 2016.

“These few extra months will mean we can add more to the launch content of the game, more than we had originally planned, and then follow with a tighter frequency of updates, which ultimately will create a better game for everyone,” Io Interactive said in a blog post. “And in the end, that’s what we’re all looking for.”

Square Enix Turns Hitman Into “Fully Episodic AAA Game”

Square Enix announced with a press release that the upcoming game has now been turned into a “fully episodic AAA game.”
Starting with a Prologue Mission and a Paris location on March 11th, followed by the next location, set in Italy releasing in April and then Morocco releasing in May. From there HITMAN will deliver regular monthly content updates, including three additional locations; Thailand, the US and Japan until the season concludes in Japan later in 2016. With weekly live events and additional planned content in between the monthly updates.”
“We decided to take the full leap and publish HITMAN as a truly episodic game experience. Part of that decision is for that little bit of extra time to ensure every location we release is at the quality level fitting for a HITMAN game. But the main driving reason is that this will allow us to create a living game that will expand and evolve over time and establish a foundation for the future – this is the first game in a storyline which will continue and expand with future Hitman games.”

^I don't know. But I'm used to buying a game as a complete package. "All In" as they say.
I don't mind bug fixes/patches to be downloaded later. Or other usual DLC packages to prolong the life span of the game like upgrades, additional map missions. But episodic?

How this one works?
Buy the game at launch then download the chapters later? Isn't that laziness on the part of the developer not completing a full game before releasing it in the market? My problem if the chapters will be downloaded is that the internet speed we have here. For sure file sizes of the succeeding chapters will be big. If I have a stable and consistent internet speed and no longer paying for the next episodes, It's not a problem.

What's the problem of developer? Too short on people and short on time for Hitman?

I've been ignoring any Hitman news so far since I haven't played any yet. But one word in a blog caught my eye.."Reboot."

Meaning I can probably try this game without being confused on the story. The problem is similar to the previous comment. I like a complete package as well.

Is it possible that SE is testing the episodic concept for AAA games because of FF7 Remake? Testing the waters perhaps with Hitman?
