And here it is! PlayStation Plus has been announced. As we suspected, the PlayStation Network itself will not change, while power users can upgrade for $50 a year or $18 for three months. And to sweeten the deal, your first three months are free. And what do you get for your hard earned dough? Tons of premium content, including "hundreds of dollars of products" throughout the year, early access to betas, and Qore. Sony is also indicating that Plus subscribers will be able to send voice messages to other gamers to invite them to play, even if they've made the foolish decision to not subscribe to Plus. Naturally, though, they won't be able to reply in kind unless they too pony up the cash.

…And there we have it. PlayStation’s newest subscription service is called PlayStation Plus. The fued over PSN over XBox Live has now been levelled due to both services coming at a premium. You get hundreds of dollars worth of value every year. Free content, PSN games, minis , discounts on media, automatic downloads. It will be available later this month, a full year for $49.99, three-month $17.99. The first three months are free for a limited time… Also included in PlayStation Plus will be Qore.

This new service will not replace the curent FREE PSN service we’re all used to, but instead will enhance the PlayStation Network expereince says Jack Tretton. Additional content and early demo access are just some of the benefits you’ll find with PlayStation Plus. PlayStation Plus subscribers also would get “hundreds of dollars” in free content and discounts on certain items within the PlayStation Store. Let’s hope it’s not for just older games like PAIN. I already have that “non-trophy getting” game. Yes, they’re THAT hard to get!

PlayStation Plus: it’s fresh, added value stuff for PlayStation fans who want a little bit more from the otherwise free PlayStation Network. But the information around is a little big confusing, and incomplete. Sure, there’s press releases, but these don’t always make it through to the public intact, and whilst over on the EU Blog James Thorpe is answering as many questions as his little fingers can reply to, there’s a lot to get through.

So, in the interests of simplicity, we’ve rounded up most of what’s important about PlayStation Plus so you can get a quick look at everything the brand new subscription service offers.

How much does it cost?

It’s €14.99 / £11.99 for 90 days and €49.99 / £39.99 for a whole year’s subscription.

What are the main features?

Monthly discounts on PS3 and PSP games, 4 free games a month, automatic downloading of patches and updates, and the ability to trial new games. More information here.

Does PlayStation Plus include Cross Game Chat?

No. The official line from Sony is that PlayStation Plus includes “games & special offers, full game trial and automatic downloads,” but we’re told that the service will “evolve over time” and that “anything they add will be a bonus.”

What happens to the content you get once your subscription ends?

Anything you buy with the exclusive discounts including exclusive add-ons, avatars and themes will be yours to keep. If you sign up for a year and download LittleBigPlanet, that’s yours to keep too.

However, the content you get for free (or, at least, included within the price) with the service, such as the minis and so-on will only work as long as you are a member of PlayStation Plus.

Do you get your games back if you re-subscribe at a later date?

Yes.

Which European territories won’t be able to sign up for PlayStation Plus?

The only territories that have access to the Store but will miss out on PlayStation Plus are Turkey and Russia.

Will there be new features in the future for PlayStation Plus members?

Again, we can only quote the official line: Sony “will always be working on evolving the service.”

What’s the ‘full game trial’?

It’s an hour’s rental, included within the PlayStation Plus price, for new PS3 games. You’ll get to demo the full game for 60 minutes, and if you decide not to buy it after that you still get to keep any Trophies you have earned, although they won’t be unlocked unless you buy the game.

Will it be all games available on the Store for Plus members as they’re released?

No. Sony will “select the best Blu-ray and PSN titles for the trial”, giving 2 different titles each month.

What games do you get included with the fee each month?

There are four games every month: 1 PSN PS3 game, 2 PSP/PS3 minis and a PS-One classic.

What firmware version does PlayStation Plus require?

3.40, which will be released, as far as we know, next week.

Do European gamers get the 3 free months like the US gamers do?

No. The US PlayStation Plus gamers get 15 months for the price of 12, but European gamers get LittleBigPlanet instead.

Can you, for example, sign up in December and get the previous five month’s worth of games for free?

No, you must be signed up for that month to get that month’s games.

Does each PSN account on the PS3 require PlayStation Plus membership to play the included games?

No, as long as it’s the master account, the sub accounts should be able to play the “majority” of the games.

Will my PS3 automatically shut-down after it’s automatically downloaded any patches and updates?

Yes. The PS3 will “automatically wake up, download, then shut down afterwards,” and you can also set the time it wakes up to best suit you.

Which games will it automatically patch and update?

The system looks at the last 10 games you’ve played, and then “the 10 before that”.

Will it update games from any region?

Sony say they “don’t see why it wouldn’t.”

What will the discounts be like for existing games?

Sony say the discounts “largely range between 20 and 50% and they vary by title”.

Can I play the minis and PS-One classics from PlayStation Plus on my PSP?

Yes, although your PSP will need to go online once to confirm you’re a PlayStation Plus member.

Good news everyone! The premium PSN service has recently been announced, and to my surprise, Sony actually didn't exactly lie about their promise.

First, we start with the good news. Everything that we get for free right now, will remain free, so suck on that Xbots.

Now, here are the exclusive features for the paid subscribers to the new service called Playstation Plus.

Full Game Trial: Users will enjoy full versions of triple A games for an hour. This is great news. This is great for people interested in high profile games such as Grand Theft Auto 4 and Metal Gear Solid 4 because now, Plus users will be able to experience the exciting opening of install screens and initial load time.

Exclusive Offers: If there's one thing that the PSN needs right now, it's more avatars and themes, and Plus delivers these demands by introducing premium themes and avatars to Plus subscribers. But the fun doesn't stop there. These exclusive offers will be available for Plus users to purchase on top of their subscriptions. Subscribers will enjoy ACCESS to purchase these great new additions to further personalize their XMBs, and look more like a douche than people with villas in Home.

Priority Beta Invitation: Now this feature really makes me jealous. Plus offers its users early access to broken alpha builds full of glitches and frustration just so these subscribers could be free laborers to test out the games for the rest of the people. Thanks guys.

Automatic Downloads: This feature is a bit ambiguous, so I'm just going to quote it directly: PlayStation®Plus downloads select demos, patches and firmware updates automatically, so you don’t have to think about it. The thing is, I can already download firmwares and patches automatically, and how does Plus magically know which demos I want to get? However, since I don't really get what this means exactly, the fanboy in me is going to pretend that this is a great new feature.

Free Games and Downloads: Plus subscribers will be able to enjoy a featured free game every month ranging from the useless minis to great titles like Wipeout HD. In addition, players will be able to enjoy free add-on contents that are featured every month. So if you've been holding out on those Super Street Fighters 4 outfits, all you've got to do now is just hold on a bit longer and pray for those add-ons to become free while you keep paying Sony every month.

PS Store Discounts: See "free games and downloads," and change "free" to "cheaper."

Select Early Demos: See "Priority Beta Invitation" and change "beta" to "demo."

Qore: Yay, I guess.

And Much More: Nah, that's pretty much it.

While it's quick for us to judge this service as a useless monthly donations to the Playstation overlords, I am thankful that it actually doesn't have anything really substantial. There's still hope that party system and universal voice chat will be updated for everyone.

However, this service is still a pretty meaningless coupon book with a monthly subscription fee, and the final kick in the balls is the fact that people can only enjoy their free stuff for the duration of their subscription. That means, once you unsubscribe, everything that you've gotten from the entirety of your subscription period will be wiped clean from your system.

Now, if you're still interested in this service, Plus is available for $18 subscription for 3 months or $50 subscription for a year, and there's a sales right now that adds 3 free months to the yearly subscription. Have fun everyone.

Think of it this way, all the free games you get (a total of 4 each month) are like rented games. You have them for the duration of the subscription, but at least you will get to play them and i assume it won't take you 12 months to finish a game. So if you've finished it and platinumed it (for you trophy hunters out there), sulit na siya.

What most of these bloggers don't say is that everything you bought with the Plus discount in the PSN Store and the free LBP for EU PSN owners will remain. You bought those, those stay. For ~P2300 annually (US PSN), that equates to ~P200 a month. sulit na to if you get a 50% discount on a single $20 game (~P460). and that's for a single game. what if you bought two or three? and don't forget DLCs. if you pay for them, even discounted, they stay.
