Square Enix Thread

Let's talk about anything about video games, no matter what platform it is. What is your favorite game? Who is your favorite character? What are the recently released games? What is DLC (downloadable content)? How do I beat this boss? How do I set up my team?

Square Enix President Talks Future Plans For Smartphone And Console Games
http://www.siliconera.com/2013/12/12/sq ... es/Console
Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda recently talked about future plans in an interview with Famitsu magazine.

Matsuda previously spoke of Square’s intent to develop more smartphone titles. Now that the publisher will soon be releasing ports of Dragon Quest I – VIII for smartphones, Famitsu asks Matsuda to share his plans and strategy behind the recent move.

“Smartphones aren’t mainly used to exclusively play games, but there are many who enjoy them [on those devices],” replies Matsuda. “The Dragon Quest series are games that can easily be enjoyed by just about anyone, so we’d like to do just that, and have as many people as possible play it. With that in mind, I believe that it’s only natural to expand towards smartphones. Again, smartphone capabilities have increased, so they no longer have any problems playing games from those series, and we’ve also decided to expand now that these devices are booming.”

“Of course, I believe that it’s important to release our content for smartphones as they continue spreading [in popularity],” responds Matsuda. “Not just ports of games, but for example, the Final Fantasy series has Final Fantasy Agito in development for smartphones. For other franchises, too, we’re thinking about working on past titles and new ones [for phones].”

“Also, not just limited to smartphones, but we’re putting consideration into the type of games and their target audience, as we decide on the platform,” Matsuda continues. “Again, I feel that we also need to add more original titles for smartphones. Similar to Kaku-san-sei Million Arthur, if it becomes a hit on smartphones, then there’s a chance we may also release it for consoles, too.”

Famitsu points out that earlier this year, Square Enix had stated that their domestic development studios will be increasing their development in smartphone titles, so they ask Matsuda what will be happening to the many titles Square Enix offers, that have captured the hearts of fans through their beautiful graphics and strong storytelling elements.

“Domestic development will not be completely devoted to just smartphone devices,” emphasizes Matsuda. “For high-end devices such as PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, we will continue focusing on them with our “flagship” titles. We’ve already announced Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III, which our domestic studios are working on, and our foreign studios are working on a sequel for Tomb Raider.”

“I believe that such story-driven single player games are written in Square Enix’s DNA,” continues Matsuda. “On the other hand, for example, if we make a sandbox-style game, I believe we’d make it into something with an online feature.”

“However, even if the game is one that focuses on its storytelling, it won’t simply just end with us selling the package and leaving it, as I’d like to continue challenging [the market] with a new business model. The business of simply selling a single item package, has become very rough, so I believe that more ingenuity and innovation is required, now more than ever.”

Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III News Coming at E3; Square Enix: “JRPG Fans Are All Over the World”
http://www.dualshockers.com/2014/03/31/ ... the-world/

Square Enix President and CEO Yosuke Matsuda is looking at the future, and today he gave some interesting information in an interview on the Japanese website Nikkei Trendy.

Matsuda-san talked about upcoming titles for this year like Final Fantasy Agito and Seiken Densetsu: Rise of MANA, defining them a good start for 2014. He also mentioned the good progress of the beta of Nosgoth and confirmed that a new Tomb Raider is in the works.

As for domestic development, he said that there’s remarkable confidence in Final Fantasy XV and and Kingdom Hearts 3. And while he can’t talk details at the moment, more will be shared in the future, like at E3.

Matsuda-san continued with a very interesting statement about the global appeal of JRPGs:

He mentioned that there are games like Bravely Default with solid JRPG elements made for the Japanese market that sold well worldwide. Although there are regional differences, and it wasn’t very visible until recently, Japanese RPG fans are spread all over the world. When the latest information is released in Japan, fans everywhere in the world can receive it instantly (you’re welcome, Matsuda-san). No matter if you’re in North America, Europe or South America, there’s no information gap.

According to Matsuda-san, if all those customers are summed up, they are a good number, and it looks less like a niche market. He believes that for games developed in the future, having powerful and rich stories that are very JRPG-like can create good results if they’re focused properly on the right target.

Matsuda-san also admitted that Square Enix may have been too focused on globalizing its target, losing focus on who they were making games for. He brought Hitman Absolution as an example for 2013. The game was created with the idea of having a wider appeal and gain popularity with new users, however the best part of the Hitman games is that they are solid hardcore games, and many fans were frustrated when focus on that was lost, causing Absolution to struggle with Sales.

The new AAA Hitman curently in development will be the result of learning that lesson, starting by targeting core fans again. Matsuda-san thinks that by following that direction the Development studio will be able to recreate the quality of the original games.

It’s definitely interesting to see that Square Enix is realizing that JRPGs can have a broader appeal than just the Japanese market, and even more exciting to hear that more will come. The recognition that going for an audience wider than cpre fans isn’t always the best path is definitely the cherry on top of a delicious cake.

Dragon Age nga Full HD sa PS4 eh... corner na corner na Ubisoft. na-under the table yan ng MS.
And hardcore PC Gamers are making fun on hardcore console gamers/fanboys now coz PCs are exemptions on Parity issues.

This guy shouldn't talk much because the definitive edition of sleeping dogs was a horrible port job that smelled of trying to cash in on the remaster trend.
